1962 had its ups and downs and illnesses. Within six months of each other, Frank and I had operations, which left Stephen holding our dwindling bank-roll. Clare would have loved to come and nurse us back to health, but the two little Banvilles held her back.

Frank had decided to get engaged at 19, a decision Stephen felt was a very slippery proposition – which turned out to be true. but all’s well that ends well.
