When the WPA made a program to subsidize needy artists – and we were needy – Stephen was assigned to the “Easel Project.” This meant that every month he would have to hand in a painting. Other artists painted murals. They received paints, brushes, etc. Human nature being what it is, it wasn’t long before people began to abuse the help they were given. They would pick up large tubes of paints every month and buy a painting from some other artists for a few dollars and hand it in as their own.

These paintings were allocated to schools, hospitals, public buildings and the artists were told where they could be found. Many of these men became well known but they were helped over a difficult period.

I worked as a dental assistant and our life was gayly flowing along.
